ALL TO ATTENTION WHORE IN DESPERATION ONCE AGAIN, WITHOUT GETTING THE FACTS!!!!!!!!I could provide examples all day. John Salter's Armor Attack run is blowing up still... hitting Yahoo! earlier today and gaining a huge amount of international coverage. Rather than be happy for the guy or for the scene in general for having such a far reaching story, there are some people knocking him for his "easy" strategy while others suggest that he must have done drugs to get there or something.
Bottom line... can't others simply be happy for those who get mainstream media attention for feats on old video games? It's damn hard to get it, as the mainstream media doesn't care about any of it organically, and it actually benefits everybody when it takes place.
Instead, there are seemingly always people who want to be blowhards about it. Some are all upset because it's not about them. Others are grumpy because they want to create additional "rules" or whatever that aren't there. Whatever.
In a "community" that always sees people pointing fingers at an endless array of people they don't even know, blaming them for their perceived problems with the whole competitive retro gaming scenes or high score chasing organizations while proclaiming to have all the answers as to how to "fix it"
Perhaps a good first step would be killing the negative reaction to anyone and everyone who dares to get a little attention for busting a record.
If anyone can think of an instance... ANY instance... where multiple people chose not to take issue with a mainstream media blitz about something someone did on an old video game, please point it out to me. I cannot think of a single one.
And that's sad.

Thor Aackerlund The classic tetris people are uncommonly kind and interesting. I don't think I've ever noticed any negative people in/around it. I'm sort of out of touch so maybe I'm wrong.
Relentless positivity trumps negativity in the end I think.

Patrick Scott Patterson It does, but even in that community, which you are mostly right about... I know two who complained about me making a big to-do about your Level 30 run... one of which refuses to talk to me since... so still not an overall perfect example, though admittedly a lot more supportive of one another than others as you note.

Jordi Schouteren People are knocking John Salter's marathon run? That's pathetic. I'm not even sure I can stay awake that long, never mind concentrating. Any of the examples mentioned above deserves huge credit. Instead of taking offence or cheap shots those people with the bad attitudes should just get their acts together and beat that score that they moan about. Seems like the best way to me to get some media attention of their own.

Patrick Scott Patterson Ian. Not very, since he hasn't held that record in decades. Jordi... there's a lot more factors to getting that kinda media than simply beating a score. Some will never understand that, though, but it is what it is. In this case, it's the 85 hours plus that is the drawing card... along with John's radioactive hair. But yes... sadly... some are choosing to tear at John's accomplishment for the most petty reasons rather than applauding the amount of positive attention it is bringing to a very niche community.

Wolff King Morrow There are always going to be trash-talking. I remember when my brother made the first sub-hour Resident Evil rocket launcher run, there were people claiming he faked it, lied about it, etc. One Gamefaqs writer even refused to believe TG when shown the link that it was verified. The guy just wouldn't accept that someone did it faster than he could. Finally when a couple of other people broke sub-hour, the hate died off on my brother.

Tina McVey The answer to your question Scott is no they can't be happy for others. Cause the green eyed monster has to roar it's ugly head every time. What about me. When is it about me. Why not me. We'll it will be about you when your not so concerned about it being about you and taking your life into your own hands in steadying of worrying about when someone is going to do it for you so you can mount your soapbox and claim all the glory for no hard earned work done.

Patrick Scott Patterson I think you nail that, Tina. To me, it's simple yet sad. Too many fail to realize that positive attention for anyone stands to benefit them by proxy.... but they squander that by focusing on tearing down those getting that spotlight rather than bettering their own situation... pretty much creating the very problem they are so upset about in the first place.
